| Quotes of Wisdom in Wikipedia | by Ajahn Chah |
"When one does not understand death, life can be very confusing."
"The Dhamma has to be found by looking into your own heart and seeing that which is true and that which is not, that which is balanced and that which is not balanced."
"Only one book is worth reading: the heart."
"Don’t think that only sitting with the eyes closed is practice. If you do think this way, then quickly change your thinking. Steady practice is keeping mindful in every posture, whether sitting, walking, standing or lying down. When coming out of sitting, don’t think that you’re coming out of meditation, but that you are only changing postures. If you reflect in this way, you will have peace. Wherever you are, you will have this attitude of practice with you constantly. You will have a steady awareness within yourself."
"When sitting in meditation, say, “That’s not my business!” with every thought that comes by."
"The heart of the path is quite easy. There’s no need to explain anything at length. Let go of love and hate and let things be. That’s all that I do in my own practice."
"We practice to learn how to let go, not how to increase our holding on to things. Enlightenment appears when you stop wanting anything."
"If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will have complete peace."
"You are your own teacher. Looking for teachers can’t solve your own doubts. Investigate yourself to find the truth - inside, not outside. Knowing yourself is most important."
"Try to be mindful and let things take their natural course. Then your mind will become still in any surroundings, like a clear forest pool. All kinds of wonderful, rare animals will come to drink at the pool, and you will clearly see the nature of all things. You will see many strange and wonderful things come and go, but you will be still. This is the happiness of the Buddha." |

| The epic poem Beowulf is a song that celebrates the life and death of an ancient hero in the hearts of Anglo-Saxons. In his quest to rescue people from Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the angry dragon, Beowulf faces violence, horror, and even death. However, the young hero shows no hesitancy. With his superior physical strength, Beowulf bravely fights to protect others and triumphs over the destructive power of the evil force. Strong, brave, and loyal, Beowulf embodies the three attributes that Anglo-Saxons valued. Through his heroic actions, Beowulf shows the qualities of a true epic hero in English literature.
One of the most important elements that every epic hero exhibits is the superhuman strength. Beowulf is an invincible man who endures great difficulties to overcome the challenges to his might. His first task is to defeat Grendel, the cursed beast who is able to snatch and kill thirty men all at once. This giant monster possesses a solid physical constitution; no sword can penetrate his skin. However, Beowulf's tremendous strength belittles Grendel's fierce power. During their battle, Grendel realizes “that nowhere on earth/ Had he met a man whose hands were harder,” reveling the superhuman power necessary for a hero in Anglo-Saxon poetry. When Grendel dies, Beowulf vanquishes Grendel's mother to secure the kingdom of King Hrothgar. Beowulf dives into the dark lake and enters the world of hungry monsters and demons. He uses a massive magic sword that no ordinary man could handle to snatch the life out of Grendel's mother. Beowulf's victories intensify the magnitude of his strength. It becomes evident that he is unmatched by any other man on Earth. With his superhuman strength, Beowulf is a dependable leader of Anglo-Saxon society.
The Anglo-Saxons prized Beowulf's extraordinary strength as well as his bravery. Fighting against monsters to protect people whose lives are in danger, death awaits Beowulf every instant, yet he shows no fear. The great warrior crosses the sea to kill Grendel and jumps into the deep lake to fight Grendel's mother. He say, “I already knew that all/ My purpose was this: to win the good will/ Of your people or die in battle,” showing the astounding courage of an epic hero that the Anglo-Saxons admired. Beowulf upholds a true heroic spirit until his death after he kills the angry dragon. Bravery plays an important role in Beowulf's victories.
With a tremendous amount of strength and courage, Beowulf is able to vanquish the demonic monsters and the furious dragon. However, to conquer the hearts of all Anglo-Saxons, the legendary warrior must be a loyal leader of his society. Indeed, in every action, Beowulf shows his loyalty to his friends and his people. As a dedicated friend, Beowulf stays by Brecca's side when they dive into the sea. When Grendel menaces the Danish kingdom, Beowulf helps destroy the monster to honor King Hrothgar. As Beowulf becomes the king of the Geats, he shows a great responsibility toward the safety of his people. He dies after his final victory in a fateful battle against the angry dragon. In his final words, Beowulf reveals his concern for the well-being of the Geats in telling Wiglaf, "I sold my life/ For this treasure and I sold it well. Take/ What I leave, Wiglaf, lead my people, " demonstrating the loyalty prized by the Anglo-Saxons.
The tale of the ancient hero Beowulf is filled with glory and victories. In every battle that he faces, Beowulf bravely uses his superhuman strength to crush the destructive power and protects everyone faithfully. In his quest to defeat Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the angry dragon, Beowulf prevails. The invincible hero upholds three elements that make him one of the most significant men of his time: superhuman strength, courage, and loyalty. The three traits that Beowulf embodies are necessary for the triumph of an epic hero in Anglo-Saxon poetry.
